Many of us have long lamented Ballard’s dearth of vegan fare, but recently, our little Scandinavian bar hood has really come up. From the 2nd location of Jhanjai Vegetarian Thai restaurant, to the vegan burger at Counter, and the vegan options at La Isla, to the vegan chorizo at Ocho, and now to a bright and beautiful all vegan bakery: Bouteloua. Ballard, thanks for being kind to animals!
Opened on May 26, 2011 by local resident, Megan Jensen, Bouteloua is cool and inviting, with a stunningly beautiful array of 100% vegan sweets ready for us to eat or take home. The wood floors, sweet mint accents, and tempting aroma of local Vashon Island Heirloom coffee, the bakery is lovely and welcoming.
Bouteloua bakes up cinnamon rolls, croissants, peanut butter cookies, chocolate chip cookies, cupcakes, breads, cheese cake, shortbread cookies, poppy seed muffins, cakes of all types, and more, lots more. KC and I decided to try the chocolate filled shortbread cookies (below left), the lemon roll, and one of their famous chocolate chip cookies. All were delectable and beautiful.
I think these vegan treats may be the fanciest you can get in town, and I plan to buy boxes of the shortbread cookies for friends when ever I can. I’ll never pass up the lemon roll and neither should you. They offer soy-free and gluten-free options and weekly bread orders too.
I hope Ballard treats this bakery well, and there is a regular line out the door. Bouteloua proves that cruelty-free and organic does not mean tasteless or cavalier. Each of her creation was clearly baked with love and care.
Check it out folks.
