Vegan Himalayan Escape Down Low

The real Himalayas may be high in the sky, but local Nepali Himalayan restaurant, Annapurna Cafe, is down low underground. But don’t let the fact that daylight doesn’t enter this restaurant deter you from exploring its sweet Hindu and Buddhist inspired food.

Although far from vegetarian, this cozy aromatic establishment has almost two dozen totally vegan items on its menu, all clearly labeled and easy to order. You’ll find food that is a strange blend of Chinese (tofu, broccoli, etc) and Indian (potatoes, spinach, curry) flavors with a special Nepalese touch. From traditional Chat-Pata Papadum, to Sambar Soup, to Tibetan style Momo, to Monk Stir-Fry, and Palak Tofu – you will not come up short on new things to try. Also, somehow their sesame salad dressing is made of spicy horseradish magic.

These photos do not do the food justice, but I didn’t want to keep this secret just because I have terrible snaps. Annapurna Cafe is warmly lit, jewel toned, and inviting – really an ideal place for a date. They even have saffron infused vodka and Mustang Beer, a Napali lager supposedly brewed from the “Himalaya’s purest water.”

So grab someone sweet and take them to this special spot below street level on Broadway on Capitol Hill.

  1. That is awesome to hear Christine! I can't wait to go back and try more things. We didn't even get to the naan. Truly and Marti – definitely get the sesame dressing on your salad if you like spicy mustard. 🙂
